"Kritios Boy"

circa 480 BCE

Why is it canonical?

Unlike earlier works of individuals that show the subject in the middle of a walk and giving equal weight to both sides, "Kritios Boy" features the subject in a contrapposto, the earliest known work to do so. This represents a move by artists toward a new naturalism. This innovative style gives viewers a sense of anatomy and musculature not present in earlier statues.
