Saint denis

Abbey Church of St. Denis

1140 - 1144

Why is it canonical?

The Abbey Church at St-Denis, France is widely considered and accepted to be the building that introduced Gothic architecture into the world. While none of its elements are completely new per se, Saint-Denis brought these elements together according to an entirely new geometric order, characterized by lightness, gracefulness, and and a sunlight filled interior, made possible by windows that took up entire walls.
