Pisa pulpit

Pulpit, Pisa Baptistery

1259 - 1260

Why is it canonical?

The pulpit of Pisa baptistery is a tremendous work of sculpture at an early stage of an incredible period for Italian art. Not only is it a great work of sculpture, it features a Roman inspired figure of Hercules, foreshadowing the influence that Greek and Roman sculpture would have on Italian works.
