Florence cathedral

Florence Cathedral

1296 - 1436

Why is it canonical?

Florence became a bustling city thanks to the commercial activity that occurred there, and the city erected a great cathedral using that wealth. The cathedral is Gothic, but uniquely Tuscan in its design, and the execution of building the great dome that was large enough to span the opening designed for it at the end of the nave was a great, unsolved engineering problem for over a century. Ultimately, Brunelleschi was the mastermind who engineered a solution. It has a detached campanile in the Italian style.
