Maesta

circa 1300

Why is it canonical?

Ducio, a contemporary of Giotto, represented the artistic movement of Siena at the time. As such, the municipality of Siena commissioned its greatest artist to paint the altarpiece of its cathedral. Clearly similar to the work done at the same time as Giotto, the careful presentation of the figures around the Virgin indicate the move toward a more realistic presentation of the human form.
