Infancy of Christ

1394 - 1399

Why is it canonical?

Melcior de Broederlam extended the International Gothic style in this altarpiece painting for the Chartreuse de Champmol, patronized by Duke Philip of Burgundy and a center of International Gothic tastes. Displaying depth and careful landscape modeling to fit the odd altarpiece shape, the work also demonstrates the realistic depiction of small details, a trend among both painting in this style as well as illustration of small designs in manuscripts, called droleries.
