The Imitation of Christ

1418 - 1427

Why is it canonical?

The Modern Devotion, or Devotio Moderna, movement was an early precursor to the Reformation, and called for apostolic reform based on a return to the values set forth by Jesus Christ as depicted in the Bible. Thomas a Kempis's work set forth those ambitions with a spiritual guidebook, whose popularity was immediate and sustaining, becoming one of the most popular Christian texts ever written and translated into more languages than any other text besides the Bible itself. It had an enormous impact, and influenced the life and thinking of many of Christianity's most notable figures.
