St. Sebastian

circa 1450

Why is it canonical?

Many significant artists, thinkers, and writers produced cultural and artistic works of great value, beauty and impact outside of the major metropolitan centers. One of those painters, Andrea Mantegna, worked for the Gonzaga in Mantua for almost his entire professional life. Like many of his contemporaries, Mantegna's work shows both the influence of the humanist movement as well as the influence of Northern European realism, showcased here in a naturalistic portrayal of the martyr St. Sebastian, blending a religious story with the aesthetics of his primary influences.
