Mona Lisa

1503 - 1505

Why is it canonical?

Commissioned by a wealthy Florentine, this is one of Western Civilization's best known portraits, and perhaps most famous paintings of all time. Relying heavily on forms and proportion, and utilizing a three quarter pose popular in Northern Europe, the subject sits in front of a foggy landscape, creating an unusual warmth and leading early commentators to suggest that da Vinci had mastered not simply recreating nature, but the layers of emotion and feeling on top of the natural world.
