Why is it canonical?

Doctor Faustus is a twist on a German legend about a man who makes a deal with the devil in exchange for unlimited knowledge and riches, and is the source of the phrase "faustian bargain". The story had such an impact on English audiences that some spectators reported seeing actual devils appear on the stage.
