Pontoromo

The Entombment

1526 - 1528

Why is it canonical?

The painter Jacopo da Pontormo, a contemporary of Rosso Fiorentino, created this work for the Capponi family chapel in Florence. It is another example of late Renaissance mannerist style precisely because of how much it differs from Pontormo's work, as artists in the period departed from familiar symbols and settings and painted in their own manner and style.
