Uffizi

circa 1560

Why is it canonical?

With an architectural design and facade by the famed Giorgio Vasari (well known for his biographies of famous artists, widely considered the first work of art history), the Uffizi provided an administrative headquarters for the duchy of Florence. The construction of the Uffizi dramatically changed the layout of the city itself, and consciously linked the city's rulers to the rulers of antiquity.
