Campidoglio

circa 1545

Why is it canonical?

As a part of the effort to reassert itself, the Catholic Church began various building programs around the city of Rome. The famous Capitoline Hill in Rome would be the location of one of Michelangelo's many architectural projects that he would pursue in the last decades of his life. The Campidoglio (or the piazza and buildings at the site) were all designed at least in part by Michelangelo.
