The Feast in the House of Levi

1573

Why is it canonical?

This tremendously large work (18'x42') depicts a raucous banquet set within ornate architectural details and demonstrates the remarkable skill of its creator, Paolo Veronese. Unfortunately, the Inquisition of the Catholic Church, in full force at the time of the painting, deemed it sacrilegious, forcing the painter to change the title to its current one and argue its merits in front of the Inquisition.
