The Conversion of St. Paul

circa 1601

Why is it canonical?

Caravaggio was the most notable Italian painter of the Baroque period. One of his most characteristic techniques is known as tenebrism, in which a beam of light illuminates the painting's subject (as seen in this painting). This painting appeared to the side of an altarpiece in Cerasi Chapel of the Santa Maria del Popolo Church (he painted the other side as well, but not the altarpiece itself).
