Surrender at Breda

1634 - 1635

Why is it canonical?

Diego Valezquez became court painter to the King of Spain Philip IV in the late 1620s, during a time in which Spanish painting began to flourish. Interestingly, this painting shows both the influence of Titian as well as that of Peter Paul Rubens, who helped Velazquez discover the works in the King's collection.
