Juan de Pareja

1650

Why is it canonical?

Velazquez was widely known as an exceptional portraitist, although this particular portrait is unique because of its subject matter: his assistant, whom he painted while waiting to paint the pope. The Moorish descent of the subject and his rough clothing, and the natural pose made this (somewhat ironically) Velazquez's most famous portrait.
