Why is it canonical?

Metamorphoses is one of the most important works in literary history. Exiled by Augustus to Tomis (a Roman colony on the Black Sea), Ovid wrote the somewhat epic poem laden with mythical and legendary themes. It became popular as soon as it was published, and saw a resurgence in popularity in the Renaissance. It has since become a staple of Latin education.
