Why is it canonical?

Virgil's tale connected the Romans, and its ruling dynasty, to the ancient Greek myths and provided a founding myth for the Roman civilization. He also glorified highly prized Roman virtues. The Aeneid remained a cornerstone of Latin literature, and along with Ovid and Horace, Virgil was considered a seminal Roman author.
