Why is it canonical?

Livy's sprawling history of centuries of Roman history, largely spanning the Republic but extending into his own time under the reign of Emperor Augustus, is a seminal work that illuminates the history of Roman civilization. It had tremendous impact on humanist political writers like Machiavelli, who sought to emulate the political achievements of the Roman Republic.
