Benedict

Rule of Saint Benedict

circa 500 - 540

Why is it canonical?

The Rule of St. Benedict essentially established organized monastic orders, not to mention the Benedictine Order itself. It did not intend to, however, stating instead that it was a set of guidelines and rules for self-organizing monasteries. Monastic orders and the communities that grew around them became a central, organizing force in Europe for centuries.
