The Canterbury Tales

1386 - 1390

Why is it canonical?

The Canterbury Tales was the first truly popular work of literature written in the English vernacular, rather than Latin or French. Chaucer had been a diplomat, and was heavily influenced by the cultural works he had been exposed to in France and Italy, and the Canterbury Tales illustrates that.
