Mosaics, Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

circa 450

Why is it canonical?

An outpouring of sacred building construction near the end of the Western Roman Empire created the need for wall decorations. Mosaics replaced older and cheaper mural painting for that purpose. These are some of the finest, and some of the earliest-made, still extant, examples of that art form.
