Why is it canonical?

The Hagia Sophia is one of the greatest and most famous architectural works of Western Civilization, and a central landmark of what is now Istanbul. Commissioned by Justinian, it has a basilica layout and is characterized by a giant dome above the nave, supported by pendentives.
